This story is about a person named Takako, a beautiful young women who lives in Tokyo and is pretty happy, but suddenly the life takes toll on her and the happiness is transformed into an endless loop of sadness and self-doubt as her boyfriend end things with her, going through the worst phase in her life and being caught in loneliness, she feels lost and sees no reason to go on with her life. To make things worse her former boyfriend works in the same company and seeing him everyday is like rubbing salt on the wound, thus she decides to quit her job. Now alone in the city of millions with no job, she struggles to keep up with her expenses and rent. That is when she gets a call from her uncle Satoru who happens to own a little book shop in tokyo named “Morisaki Bookshop”, who provides her with an idea of moving in with him for a certain time, till she is okay.
The little secondhand bookshop in a small part of Tokyo seemed to be the turning point in Takako’s life, she never liked reading but she found solace in the pages of a new book. She started recovering from the past and recognises that she and her uncle had more in common than they actually knew ,creating an unbreakable bond between them, the story starts taking a turn when Satoru’s wife momoko suddenly returns back after 5 years. Unfolding the reason for her leaving and returning.
A decent read, a bit slow yet comforting in its own way, the book has two parts- Takako’s journey and Momoko’s return. Personally, i believe the story could’ve been better if the focus was on a single storyline, also the book ends 20 pages early than you expect which is kinda disappointing and the final pages serve as a sneak peek into another novel, which feels a bit of a letdown. However the one and the most beautiful takeaway is the realization that, in some way or the other, we’re all creating or have created a positive impact on someone’s life and we might not even realize that. And let me tell you, the description of the small town bookshop is a paradise for every book lover!
So take a dive into this book and let me in on your thoughts. Happy reading!
