I’m a huge bookworm, and let me tell you, I’m pretty picky about what I read. If a book doesn’t grab me from the beginning itself, i might not continue reading it. But “Anxious People” is a whole different story. Once you start reading, good luck trying to put it down. It’s just what you need for a mood boost!

As you start reading the novel, one might perceive this as a hostage drama or a gripping thriller with law enforcement delving into the suspects to uncover the perpetrator. However, as you go on reading, the narrative subtly transforms into a more amicable hostage scenario, with unexpected twists and turns. Yet, as the story progresses, its essence transcends beyond a mere hostage plot, delving into the complexity of life itself. It expresses the interconnection of individuals and the emotional burdens and anxieties they carry, often unnoticed by others. Each character is intertwined, directly or indirectly, through shared experiences or a common location.

A beautifully crafted piece by Fredrik Backman, with unique mood lighting and a delightfully funny storyline teeming with joy, humor, and deep compassion. It delves into the profound themes of life, emotional baggage, love, death, and the solace of comfort.

One of the most human things about anxiety is that we try to cure chaos with chaos

The story starts with a bank robber trying to rob a bank, only to realize that it’s a cashless bank. Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the bank, there was an apartment viewing taking place. When things didn’t go as planned, the robber panicked and, in an attempt to hide from the police, entered the apartment where the viewing was happening. As the apartment was for sale, there were prospective buyers present at the viewing. This is how a story of robbery gets turned into a hostage drama; it only took one really bad decision. If the bank robber had made a different choice or not attempted to rob a cashless bank, the entire scenario could have been avoided. But such is the complexity of the human mind; sometimes people make unwise decisions in urgent situations.

2 police officers, who happens to be part of a father-son duo, quickly gathers around the building, accompanied by extensive media coverage all over town. The bank robber becomes entangled with a group of unlikely people who, at the beginning, couldn’t stand each other but, by the end, know each other’s deepest secrets. As the hostages are released, a gunshot is heard from the apartment, and the bank robber is nowhere to be found. Suddenly, the air is filled with questions. Where on earth did that bank robber disappear to? How on earth did it manage to pull off a disappearing act in an apartment surrounded by media and police?

I stumbled upon this incredible book at just the right moment in my life, and it has truly made an impact in a way that it will stick with me. Filled with relatable quotes and offering a brilliant perspective on life and the baggage that people carry around, it’s a topic that resonates widely and is portrayed in an extremely easy and funny way. I’ve already recommended it to all my friends who read and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone searching for insight and an enjoyable read.

We never really know what we do to each other, with each other, to each other.
